Facet Joint Injections are used to reduce pain and inflammation directly in the facet joints.  This procedure is performed under fluoroscopic guidance which allows the physician to place the steroid medication at the precise level of the spine.  The physician may inject both an anesthetic and a steroid medication.  Initial pain relief may be felt from the anesthetic which typically wears off in about a day.  The steroid which is addressing the inflammation will start to take effect in 3 to 10 days.  The relief provided by this type of injection may last several days to several months.
