EMG and Nerve Conduction Studies

  • EMG and Nerve Conduction Studies

Electromyography (EMG) is a diagnostic study used to determine if muscle weakness is caused by a neurological disorder.  Dr. Martinez performs this diagnostic procedure using an EMG machine.  Electrodes are connected to the ends of the muscles using a thin needle.  The physician will then read the electrical activity across the muscle.

A nerve conduction study (NCS) is an electrodiagnostic test to investigate symptoms that may involve the nerves of the arms or legs.  Common conditions that can be tested with NCS are carpal tunnel syndrome, ulnar neuropathy, diabetic peripheral neuropathy, or other conditions that may interfere with the function of the nerves.
